The Defence Headquarters has launched an online discount shopping platform designed to provide serving and retired personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, veterans, fallen heroes’ families and their dependants with access to essential goods and services at discounted prices.
The initiative, developed as part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare and quality of life of military personnel and their families, is being implemented through a partnership between the Armed Forces and the private sector.
The platform was formally launched by the Special Guest of Honour, Senator George Akume, who commended the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, and other stakeholders for conceiving and bringing the initiative to fruition.
Akume said the welfare of military personnel extends beyond operational support, stressing that a motivated and resilient Armed Forces must be sustained by deliberate measures that prioritise the wellbeing of personnel and their families.
He said the Federal Government recognises initiatives that improve access to essential goods and services, reduce financial pressures and enhance the quality of life of military personnel as critical components of a comprehensive welfare framework.
According to him, the online discount platform demonstrates how innovation and digital technology can be deployed to address contemporary welfare needs while providing practical benefits to citizens who have dedicated their lives to the security of the nation.
He noted that eligible serving and retired personnel would have convenient access to a range of goods at discounted prices through the digital platform.
The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation also welcomed the inclusion of veterans and their families, describing them as an important part of the Armed Forces family whose sacrifices and contributions to national security deserve continued recognition and support.
He said the participation of veterans reflected the principle of continuity in the nation's responsibility towards members of the Armed Forces, both serving and retired.
Akume also commended the Defence Headquarters and Zinox Group for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, describing the agreement as an important framework for cooperation between the Armed Forces and the private sector.
He said the partnership demonstrated the benefits of combining the capabilities of public institutions and private organisations in pursuit of shared national objectives.
The Special Guest of Honour urged stakeholders responsible for the implementation of the scheme to ensure transparency, reliability and responsiveness, stressing that the credibility of the initiative would ultimately be determined by the quality of services delivered and the tangible benefits enjoyed by beneficiaries.
He further charged the management of the platform to maintain high standards, continuously improve the user experience and ensure that the benefits provided under the partnership remain accessible to eligible personnel, veterans and their families.
Akume also encouraged eligible beneficiaries to make effective use of the platform while calling on those responsible for its implementation to sustain and continually improve the scheme.
In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, described the initiative as a significant step towards improving the welfare of Armed Forces personnel and their families.
The CDS commended the Defence Headquarters' Department of Transformation and Innovation for developing the initiative and also appreciated Zinox Group for partnering with the Armed Forces to actualise the project.
Oluyede said the platform would provide serving and retired personnel and their families with convenient access to essential household items and other goods at affordable and discounted prices.
He stressed that the initiative was not merely about online shopping or discounts but represented a practical expression of the Federal Government's people-centred approach to military welfare and recognition of the sacrifices made by personnel in the service of Nigeria.
The CDS said sound welfare administration was integral to building a resilient, motivated and operationally effective Armed Forces.
He noted that improving the morale and welfare of military personnel also had a direct impact on their families, particularly those who constantly bear the burden of the absence of loved ones deployed for military operations.
According to him, the platform would leverage digital technology and strategic partnerships to complement existing welfare measures and improve service delivery to personnel and veterans.
Oluyede disclosed that the Defence Headquarters would generate and maintain the requisite data for the scheme by interfacing with relevant military service platforms and the Military Pensions Board.
He, however, stressed the need to build a robust technological foundation capable of accommodating future expansion, noting that digital systems evolve rapidly and must be designed to accommodate larger databases and changing technological requirements.
The CDS said accurate and reliable data would be critical to the sustainability of the scheme, adding that the long-term success of the initiative would depend on collective efforts by all stakeholders.
He urged military personnel and other eligible beneficiaries to make judicious use of the platform while calling on those entrusted with its implementation to ensure continuous improvement.
Oluyede disclosed that the initiative would be expanded through additional strategic partnerships with major private-sector organisations to provide military personnel with access to other essential goods and services.
He specifically mentioned plans to explore partnerships with organisations such as Dangote to facilitate access to building materials and other commodities that could further improve the living conditions of personnel.
The CDS also revealed that the Defence Headquarters intends to establish physical discount outlets in the future where soldiers, ratings, airmen and airwomen would be able to purchase goods and access services at significantly reduced prices.
Explaining the structure of the scheme, the Defence Headquarters said the online discount platform was developed to leverage digital technology in providing welfare support to personnel and their families.
The platform will enable beneficiaries to purchase a range of goods and services at discounted rates, while also allowing eligible personnel to enrol their spouses and children.
Beyond consumption, the initiative is designed to create economic opportunities for members of military families.
According to the Defence Headquarters, spouses and children of personnel who are unemployed may use the platform as a channel to participate in online commercial activities, thereby creating opportunities for income generation and employment.
The scheme is open to serving personnel and their families, retired military veterans and their families, as well as families of fallen heroes.
Serving members of the National Youth Service Corps are also expected to have access to the platform under the scheme.
To ensure that the platform is restricted to eligible beneficiaries, the Defence Headquarters has established a verification and approval process.
Applicants are required to register through the online platform, after which their information will undergo verification by a dedicated desk at the Defence Headquarters.
Once the submitted information satisfies the stipulated requirements, the applicant will be approved and granted access to the platform.
The entire application, verification and approval process is designed to be completed digitally, allowing beneficiaries to access the service from the comfort of their homes.
The initiative is therefore expected to combine welfare support, digital innovation and private-sector partnerships in reducing the financial burden on military families while improving access to essential goods and services.
The Defence Headquarters said the launch represents the beginning of a broader welfare programme that will continue to evolve through additional partnerships and the eventual establishment of physical discount outlets for Armed Forces personnel and their families.
