"Shooting Incident Happened Outside Ojo Cantonment" - Army Clarifies

The Nigerian Army has clarified reports circulating on social media alleging that gunmen shot and killed a civilian within the Ojo Military Cantonment in Lagos.

In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 DivisionLieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, the Army dismissed the claims, describing them as misleading.

According to the statement, the unfortunate incident, which occurred on 18 October 2025, happened near the Mammy Market abattoir gate — not inside the Cantonment. Preliminary investigations indicated that the shooting was linked to suspected cult-related activities, which tragically resulted in the death of one Rilwan Adekunle.

The Army explained that a standby team responded swiftly to a distress call and evacuated the victim to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre, being the nearest medical facility. Sadly, the victim was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

While expressing sadness over the loss of life, the 81 Division extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

The statement further urged members of the public and the media to always verify information from appropriate authorities before dissemination to prevent the spread of misinformation.
